As a Black male born and raised in Brownsville Housing projects and Crown Heights sections in Brooklyn, NY, Julius grew up in neighborhoods where he watched the cycle of violence and preventable health disease rip through families like a Biblical plague. This was his reality, until he found nursing which was his way out.

Then as he pursued advanced practice degrees, nursing gave him another gift. It provided him with a conduit back into his neighborhood to become a change agent in working towards breaking the cycle of poverty and poor health.Dr. Julius Johnson is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner who received his Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Miami in December of 2016.

During his time at Miami he learned how to translate research into practice and piloted a high intensity transitional care program through a collaboration he championed between several health care partners including Interfaith Medical Center and Essen Med House Calls. Dr. Johnson received his Bachelors and Masters degrees of Science in Nursing from Binghamton University. After finishing his Bachelors he went on to work for New York University Medical Center in their critical care units including the medical, surgical, cardiovascular, and coronary care units. Two years after his graduation, he went back to Binghamton University to start his Family Nurse Practitioner degree. While attaining his Family Nurse Practitioner degree, he learned that nursing does not begin nor end at the bedside. Instead, bedside nursing is just one facet on the wide spectrum of nursing care. Nursing is an ever-expanding field. This discovery transformed his concept of nursing and his scope of practice. His professors encouraged him to wear many nursing hats, especially those not traditionally thought of as nursing. As an advanced practice nurse and Black male specializing in providing both primary care and transitional care for homebound patients for the past 9 years, he is constantly given a unique opportunity to affect the health of minorities in low income neighborhoods, including the ones that he grew up in. While this is his primary job, he wears many other hats, like he was taught to in nursing school. He is currently the director of the Family Nurse Practitioner program and an Assistant Professor at Long Island University- Brooklyn, teaching in both the Graduate and Undergraduate programs. He teaches pharmacology and advanced pharmacology as well as diagnosis and management for advanced practice nurses. He chairs the school of nursing honor society as well as the inter professional education committee throughout the various health care professional schools on campus.

In addition to his many nursing positions he is also very involved in his community. He coaches organized football for The Brooklyn Skyhawks, a community team of young Black males, 6-16 years of age, serves as a city advisor for the Juvenile Urban Multicultural Program (J.U.M.P. Nation), who brings up at risk 8th graders from New York City to Binghamton University for an all expensed paid 4 day weekend, and is an annual guest speaker for the annual Men’s Summit in New York. Throughout his community involvement and outreach programs, he is always mentoring, providing nursing care, and promoting healthy behaviors in young black males to improve health outcomes.

His professional goals are aimed at reducing or eliminating health care disparities via addressing the determinants of health that predispose black males to poorer outcomes. Through creating multiple health care companies such as the Premium Health Depot, Dr.Nurses, and Dr.NurseNY, he strives to serve as a trailblazer for the Doctor of Nursing Profession while using these platforms to achieve his professional goals.
