About The Doctorate

The doctoral degree in nursing is a terminal degree, which allows nurses to practice or perform to the full extent of the profession.  There are multiple doctoral degrees.  Among them, arguably the four most recognized, are the PH. D, DNS, EdD, and the DNP. The PH.D and Doctor of Nursing Science (DNS, DSN, or DNSc) are research doctorates which prepare nurses to be experts in building, conducting, and interpreting research.  The EdD prepares nurses to become experts at creating and teaching curriculum throughout the nursing profession. The DNP prepares nurses to become experts at translating research into actual practice, evaluating the practice and implementing redefined practice post evaluation process.
